Paddy Killer

'Fits Like a Glove' by Paddy Killer. Paddy has arthritis everywhere - gloves do not fit her stiff and deformed hands, so she has drafted this pattern for imagined gloves, enabling someone to make some pairs for her.

I remember visiting Surgeons Hall for the first time, in Edinburgh, just as my body began to show the first contortions of Arthritis, and being amazed at how bones swell, and bend and twist with this disease, not something you really think about until you are dealing with it and the lack of conformity in feet and hands that make shoes and gloves an impossibility. So of course I love this project by Paddy Killer.

Adelaide Cioni

Above: Costume for a Circle, 2023, worn by Typhaine Delaup by Adelaide Cioni, (thank you).

‘Patterns are the visualisation of a rhythm in space. This rhythm takes on different shapes and colours to express the different vibrations of whoever is creating it. And it is repetitive and constant because that is the basis of life. The heart and our internal organs are repetitive and constant. They are the bass line of our existence. So, patterns are a portrayal of the bass line of our existence. Making or drawing a pattern is like singing a song. Projecting out your own rhythm, your own vibration. To see it double itself, to have confirmation of your being real.’ Adelaide Cioni

Everyday Yōkai

Everyday Yōkai is a collection of AI generated images based on the creatures of Japanese folklore. Everyday Yōkai asks the question, "What would Yōkai be like if we saw them today?" Keep and eye out and you just might see one.

Florence Sargent

Tactile, textile, sensory, play objects  by Florence Sargent made from recycled board,  felt, calico, waste upholstery foam and pigment ink. The outer layer uses the play materials felt coloured with an acrylic paint based mix, developed to be suitable for submerging and dyeing.

Florence uses colour to lead design which often results in a kaleidoscope of geometry with seamless line fluidity and a curiosity towards optical play. Her journey through the RCA has been anchored by the desire to encourage a playful engagement with surfaces through use of colour theory and soft materials.

Xiaoyu Zhu

I can feel the vibration of nature in heaven and earth.
I yearn for the state in Chinese Taoist thoughts,
feeling nature within and self without, to a subtle bliss.
Can humans resonate with the nature and universe?
I want to create such a breath.
Let my textiles be birds, waves, forests,
Chirruping, flying, floating, drifting,
As you breathe. Xiaoyu Zhu
Xiaoyu Zhu graduated this year from the RCA in textiles.
